UNEP/GRID-Warsaw Centre has been distinguished as the Regional Contact Point (RCO Mazovia) for wide promotion of satellite technologies applications among public administration.

The European Earth observation programme Copernicus, previously known as GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security), is coordinated and managed by the European Commission in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Environment Agency (EEA).

Copernicus programme is focused on development of the Earth monitoring system. Data collected from earth observation satellites and in situ sensors such as ground stations, airborne and sea-borne sensors are processed to provide users with reliable and up-to-date information through a set of services related to environmental and security issues (maps, datasets, reports).

Common use of the Copernicus services will contribute to more effective and less expensive environmental management. It will accelerate response in crisis situations such as floods or forest fires, improving safety of the citizens in European countries.
