UNEP/GRID-Warsaw Centre is one of the main social partners in implementation of the Carpathian Convention in Poland. We are the member of the Carpathian Convention National Steering Committee and cooperate with the Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention (UNEP Vienna – SCC).

The Framework Convention on the Protection and Sustainable Development of the Carpathians (Carpathian Convention) is besides the Alpine Convention the second international agreement for the protection and sustainable development of a single mountain region worldwide.

Carpathian Convention is a framework document. It does not provide specific, easily enforceable obligations. It expresses willingness of the Parties to close cooperation in order to achieve general goals of the Convention. It determines political goals, cooperation rules and obligations of the Parties. Successful implementation of the Convention requires therefore adoption of thematic Protocols containing specific substantive obligations of the Parties.

Carpathian Convention was signed on 22 May 2003 in Kyiv, Ukraine, and entered into force on 4 January 2006.
