Industry contributes the largest share to the Gross National Product (32.2%), while agriculture accounts for 6.2%.
About 25% of the workers are employed in industry, while about 7% of active workers work in the construction industry. In the last
few years these numbers have been decreasing because of the recession in industry and construction. The branches of industry which contribute the most to the National Product are the electromechanical and food industries. The share of the power generating industry is increasing, while, in accordance with world trends, the shares of the raw materials branches of the industry, namely fuel, metallurgy, lumber and paper industries are decreasing.
Industry shows a tendency to concentrate in limited areas. Larger centres and industrial districts developed mainly in the areas which are rich in natural resources – primarily where hard coal and other minerals are extracted (for example the Upper-Silesian Industrial District) – and in the vicinity of large cities such as Warsaw, Lodz and Cracow. In Poland it is possible to distinguish over 20 industrial districts. They occupy 18.5% of Poland's territory and 48% of the inhabitants of Poland live within them. The largest districts are: the Upper-Silesian Industrial District, the Warsaw Industrial District and the Lodz Industrial District.
