GLOBE Student Climate Research Campaign

In September 2011 the GLOBE Student Climate Research Campaign (SCRC) will start. In this campaign 1,000,000 students worldwide will work together in the online GLOBE community. Most of the activities within this campaign will be online, but we also want to organize some exchange of teachers and students within the region, having a climax in a Youth Summit for GLOBE students in 2012. A two-year event that engages students from around the world in the process of investigating and researching their local climate and sharing their findings globally. SCRC is comprised of learning activities, international collaborative discussions on climate, data collection, and short-term and longer-term research investigations. All participants will gain a fundamental understanding of climate and the climate system through inquiry-based, hands-on activities and international collaboration before exploring climate through research. Climate is the critical issue of our time and understanding climate from a scientific perspective is critical to addressing local climate impacts. The SCRC will officially launch internationally in September 2011 and conclude in 2013. International learning symposia highlighting student climate research will occur in June 2013. GLOBE is uniquely positioned to help students understand the science of climate and help them contribute to further understanding of how climate impacts each person on Earth.

Comenius School Partnership funding

The EU Comenius fund offers schools the opportunity to travel with students and teachers within the European region and do school projects. We want to make a multilateral proposal that will be submitted by at least one school from every EU or related (GLOBE) country.

Preparatory meeting

We want to have one or more schools from every eligible country. They will first get together in a preparatory meeting to shape the project. During and after the prep meeting they will work together on a final proposal to the EU with the help of the GLOBE Office for Europe & Eurasia.

What activities will the schools do during the project?

The basic idea of the proposal will be that schools will work together in different EU countries to join the international GLOBE Student Climate Research Campaign. They will for example use the online materials that are developed by the international GLOBE Program. Of course schools will have to decide together what exactly they want to do. GLOBE Country Coordinators can help them with providing ideas and opportunities. One of the climaxes in the activities that the schools undertake will be a Youth Summit:

YOUTH SUMMIT 2012 in the Netherlands

Thu

Registration of students/teachers for GLOBE YOUTH SUMMIT.

Fri

  • Presentations and discussions by students, scientists and teachers. What are the outcomes of the climate research and how should we do the interpretation.
  • Students offer a report with research results to representatives of EU and/or other relevant organisation.
  • Cultural evening program.

Sat

Sun

Field day with visit to the famous Delta works that the Dutch built to be able to live in a country below sea level.

What is the target group?

The Youth Summit will be planned around groups of 5 students to 1 teacher. Presentations from students will be done in two levels (age 12-15 and age 15-18). Countries could bring one or two groups (up to 10 students) + Country Coordinator + Scientist.  If your country would like to bring two groups then they should be from each level.

What do schools have to do to join?

  • Be able to join the project as mentioned in the planning below. Details will be worked out later.
  • Submit a proposal for the preparatory meeting (that we will prepare together with them) to the national contact point of Comenius (EU).
  • Submit a final proposal to the national contact point.

One school join the proposal. Schools should be able to join all activities as mentioned in the planning (will be) and be able to submit a proposal to the national contact point. The GLOBE Office for Europe & Eurasia will be the main contact for the schools. We will write the proposal together with them. Of course it would be nice if you could help them, but it is not necessary.
